An eye specialist and consultant in low vision in Warri, Delta State, South South Nigeria, Dr Comfort Omo-Irabor, says people with dark brown eyes have a higher risk of developing cataracts.
The expert, who described cataracts as clouding of the lens in the eyes that impede vision, said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Warri. She explained that cataracts could be congenital or hereditary.
Omo-Irabor, however, said that the Ultra Violet Rays from the sun, computers and cell phones are a known contributor to cataract development, no matter the colour of the eyes.
The optometrist called on Nigerians to go for regular eye checks, avoid smoking, and take anti-oxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, carotenoids, Lutein and others to prevent cataracts.
