Medical doctors have warned against the prolonged use of scented candles in enclosed places, highlighting potential health risks associated with their use.
The experts further cautioned against using scented candles containing chemicals that include parasynthetic wax, advocating the adoption of candles with natural oils. Scented candles are accessories placed in conspicuous corners of the home to add beauty, warmth and pleasant smell.
Recently, a medical doctor cum social media influencer, Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, raised concerns about the widespread use of scented candles in households and indoor environments. Renowned for his advocacy on health issues, Aproko Doctor emphasized the potential harm posed by the fumes released during the burning of scented candles to the health of individuals residing in such spaces.
He drew a comparison between the fumes emitted by scented candles and those produced by car exhaust, highlighting that individuals in rooms with scented candles inhale unhealthy air. The doctor said, “Almost every house you enter now, there’s a center candle inside. If you check into the American kitchen house, there is a candle inside. Once they rented this house, candles were the first thing that entered inside. Even before the chair and table, they must put a candle. “For aesthetics, their house must be fine, candles must be inside. I want you to know that that candle can be causing problems for you. The candles have chemicals inside, for example, parasynthetic wax, and chemical ingredients. “When they bond, they can give us a chemical known as alkanes. Alkanes are found in the exhaust of a car. So you just think that you put your car exhaust in your door and then you just start blowing it. That’s exactly what you are doing.” He further said that burning candles in enclosed spaces poses greater health risks than benefits.
For individuals who felt compelled to use scented candles, Aproko Doctor recommended opting for candles made with natural ingredients like soy wax or beeswax. “Which natural ingredients am I talking about? I’m talking about soy wax or beeswax, and the natural oils must be used. That way, when you are burning it, you know that you’re not breathing in rubbish. And please open your doors and your windows so that your neighbors can smell it too with you. My dear, protect your lungs and don’t use aesthetics to cause problems for yourself,” he said. Speaking on the issue, a Public Health physician, Dr Babatunde Adewumi emphasized the health risks of prolonged use of scented candles in enclosed spaces. However, he noted that while scented candles emit vapors and particles into the air, the amount released during burning is usually below harmful levels. Referring to a peer-reviewed study, Adewumi noted that after four hours of continuous burning, levels of potentially harmful chemicals such as benzene and formaldehyde remained below recommended indoor air quality limits. “This led researchers to conclude that under normal conditions of use, scented candles don’t pose known health risks. However, it’s essential to note that few studies have investigated the health effects of burning scented candles, and most research has been conducted by researchers affiliated with the candle industry but they’ve been validated by independent researchers,” the physician said.
To reduce the potential health risks associated with burning scented candles, Adewumi recommended ensuring proper ventilation in the room either by opening windows or using fans to allow fresh air to circulate. He also advised limiting the duration of time candles are burned, especially in enclosed spaces. “Choose candles made from natural ingredients with fewer additives and synthetic fragrances. Consider using candle alternatives like essential oil diffusers or beeswax candles, which may produce fewer harmful chemicals. “Keep candles away from drafts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children and pets. Trim candle wicks to ¼ inch before each use to prevent excessive smoking and soot production. Pay attention to any adverse reactions or symptoms while burning candles and discontinue use if necessary,” Adewumi advised.
