A dingy, filthy public at Ogunlana Street, Egbeda, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria, has been sealed by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office following reports of illegal activities and environmental hazards.
This was disclosed in a statement on X.com by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
According to the statement, the toilet, which was found to be harboring a large number of unaccounted bike riders, was discovered to be discharging untreated wastewater into public drainage, causing foul odors and posing a significant risk to groundwater contamination.
Following the exercise, the agency has urged citizens to desist from wastewater mismanagement, warning that it could lead to the spread of Cholera in the state.
The agency stated, “The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) today 28th June 2024 in response to a public report sealed off a public toilet at Ogunlana Street, Egbeda, Lagos which gave shelter to a large number of persons that could not be accounted for being bike riders.”
“The visit to the toilet by the agency revealed that there was a large volume of untreated wastewater was being discharged into the public drainage causing foul smell in the community, a potential source of contamination to the groundwater, and unruly behavior of the riders.”
“All citizens of the State are enjoined to desist from all acts of wastewater mismanagement that could potentially lead to the spread of Cholera in the State.”
