Australian midfielder Cristian Volpato is being investigated after allegedly testing positive for cocaine during a roadside drug test following two speeding incidents in Sydney.
Police said the 22-year-old was first stopped for allegedly driving well above the speed limit before being stopped again about two hours later for another speeding offence.
During the second stop, he allegedly returned a positive roadside oral fluid test for cocaine. His international driver’s licence was suspended for six months, while a second sample has been sent for laboratory analysis.
Volpato, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo and recently represented Australia at the FIFA World Cup, is awaiting the outcome of the investigation. Football Australia and Sassuolo have yet to comment.
