A tragic incident occurred in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, when a man believed to be struggling with mental health issues attacked and killed a soldier.
The incident, which saw onlookers scampering to safety, happened in broad daylight on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses report that the assailant, who appeared to be unarmed except for a wooden club, approached the soldier and struck him repeatedly.
The deceased soldier, said to be attached to Operation AWASE, a joint military special task force, to combat crime in the state, succumbed to his injuries.
The incident occurred on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at around 4pm when the soldier was deployed for internal security duties.
The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has also confirmed the incident, offering condolences to the family of the deceased soldier.
Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Musa Yahaya, disclosed on Tuesday that the soldier was attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation when the attacker struck him on the head with a heavy log, causing severe injuries.
He disclosed that other soldiers quickly brought the situation under control, neutralising the attacker and recovering the soldier’s weapon.
Yahaya also explained that the injured soldier was rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated, and the army has urged the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities.
