The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Thursday issued a three-day severe weather alert characterised by heavy rainfall and strong winds in different regions from Friday.
According to the High Impact-Based Forecast issued by the agency, Southern states should prepare for potential flooding incidents.
It said on Friday April 11, there would be moderate to heavy rainfall in states such as Ogun, Oyo and Osun, adding Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti will also experience downpours as well as Edo, Delta and Imo.
Low to moderate rainfall will cover other areas such as Niger, Kwara and the FCT. Plateau, Adamawa and Kaduna face lighter showers while Nasarawa, Kogi and Benue should also expect rain.
The heavy rainfall and strong winds pattern continues Saturday, according to the bulletin.
Cross River and Akwa Ibom will face the worst conditions, adding Bayelsa and Rivers states join the high-risk category with rainfall amount reaching 50mm in 24 hours.
By Sunday, the weather system begins weakening. However, Osun and Ekiti remain under threat. Oyo, Ogun and Lagos still face flood risks. Ondo, Imo and Anambra complete the alert area.
Northern regions face different weather challenges entirely. Strong winds will hit Jigawa and Yobe first. Borno, Bauchi and Niger follow with gusty conditions. Kwara, Kogi and Benue complete the wind belt.
NiMet predicted surface winds exceeding 30 knots which may damage property and disrupt travel plans.
The agency said airlines have been notified about potential turbulence while residents were advised to secure loose outdoor items.
The bulletin said, “Riverine communities should monitor water levels carefully. The heavy rainfall and strong winds is dangerous. Flash floods may develop quickly in some areas. All residents must stay weather-aware.
“State governments are coordinating response efforts. Emergency services have been placed on standby. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during storms. Temporary shelters are being prepared as a precaution.
“The weather system will gradually weaken Sunday evening. However, residual effects may continue Monday. NiMet promises to update forecasts as needed. Citizens should monitor official channels for changes.
“This weather event requires caution. Heavy rainfall and strong winds pose multiple hazards. All citizens should follow safety guidelines. Never attempt to cross flooded roadways.
“The forecast covers April 11-13 nationwide. NiMet’s data shows clear regional variations. Southern states face water-related dangers. Northern areas must prepare for wind damage.”
