A non-profit organisation and public health advocacy group, Network for Health Equity and Development, has stated that the daily salt intake of Nigerians is three times higher than the global standard.
NHED’s Project Advisor, Dr Jerome Mafein, stated this during a campaign to reduce salt content in processed food in Nigeria.
The World Health Organisation recommends a maximum salt intake of less than 2,000mg, per day for an individual.
The WHO, however, stated that the global average salt intake is estimated at 4000mgs per day, which implies twice the daily recommended quantity.
According to Havard T.H Chan School of Public Health, overconsumption of sodium in diets can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
