Kenneth Nwabueze, one of the survivors of the three-storey building collapse at Alakija in the Oriade Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, has said he is grateful to be alive despite losing his apprentice in the tragedy.
In a report published by PUNCH on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Nwabueze said no one affected by the incident could be happy because several people lost their lives in the building collapse.
He said although he lost machines and other valuable property, those items can be replaced, unlike the lives that were lost. He added that he is thankful to God for sparing his life because his wife and children would have been devastated if he had died.
Nwabueze also expressed sadness over the death of his apprentice, saying the young man’s parents were left heartbroken. He added that nine people died in the building collapse and prayed for their souls to rest in peace.
He said, “I feel bad because my worker was not rescued; he died. His parents were sobbing, but there was nothing we could do. Nine people died, and I pray that their souls rest in peace”
