Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely recognised as Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the age of 33 after battling complications linked to Marfan syndrome.
According to Vanguard News, Samed passed away on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for infected leg sores that worsened despite medical care.
A family member, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, said Samed had shown signs of improvement before his condition suddenly deteriorated.
He described the deceased as a kind and generous person whose death has continued to draw mourners to the family home.
Popularly known as Awuche, Samed was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome in his 20s after experiencing rapid physical changes.
He measured 7 feet 4 inches (223 centimetres) during a BBC assessment in 2022, although his family believed he had grown even taller before his death.
Despite his health challenges, Samed became a respected figure across Ghana and brought national attention to his hometown of Gambaga.
His popularity and resilience earned him admiration, while businessman Ibrahim Mahama had recently supported his medical treatment by covering his hospital expenses.
His family said the infected sores that led to his hospitalisation were likely complications associated with Marfan syndrome.
He will be buried in Tamale to accommodate the large number of expected mourners, as tributes continue to pour in from across northern Ghana.
