A lesson teacher identified simply as Michael has been remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre after being arraigned before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court over the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old student in the Ketu area of Lagos State. According to Punch News, the court adjourned the case until August 24 for further hearing.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arraignment through its spokesperson, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, who said the suspect was taken into custody after the case was reported on July 13 and was later remanded following his court appearance. The suspect had earlier been hospitalised after collapsing before his scheduled arraignment.
The police also dismissed allegations that officers attempted to pressure the victim’s family into accepting ₦200,000 to withdraw the case, describing the claim as untrue. The command maintained that investigations were conducted properly before the suspect was charged.
The case had drawn public attention after reports alleged that the teenager was repeatedly assaulted at a tutorial centre and threatened into silence. A gender-based violence advocacy group had also urged the police to ensure the suspect faced justice.
