A member of the House of Representatives representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu, has urged residents to withdraw their savings and acquire weapons to defend themselves against bandit attacks.
Daily Post reports that the lawmaker made the call while reacting to the recent abduction of Bungudu Local Government Chairman, Nura Abdullahi, and the killing of four members of his security team.
Speaking during an interview with DCL Hausa, Zubairu said residents should contribute money to obtain weapons for community protection, even though he acknowledged that such a move conflicts with the Constitution.
According to the lawmaker, saving innocent lives should take priority in the face of persistent attacks.
The lawmaker, however, maintained that both President Bola Tinubu and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal were making efforts to address insecurity, but insisted that communities must also play a role in defending themselves.
He argued that bandits gain the upper hand mainly because they possess more sophisticated weapons and suggested that any weapons acquired for self-defence could be registered with the relevant authorities.
His remarks followed Saturday’s attack on the residence of Bungudu Local Government Chairman, Nura Abdullahi, during which gunmen reportedly killed two police officers and two local vigilantes before abducting the chairman, his wife, children, and other family members into the forest.
