A viral report about an alleged disagreement between a bride and her mother-in-law over food at a wedding reception has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians divided over who was responsible.
According to Punch News, the incident reportedly happened after food ran out at the reception. The bride allegedly refused to give the remaining food, which she had reserved for her parents, to guests from the groom’s family who arrived late. The situation reportedly escalated into both women exchanging slaps, while the groom was said to have ended the marriage shortly afterwards.
Legal experts quoted in the report noted that a statutory marriage in Nigeria cannot ordinarily be dissolved after only two days, except in limited circumstances allowed by law. The incident has continued to generate debate online over family boundaries, wedding etiquette, anger management and relationships.
