A 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, has died after he reportedly crashed along Ikotun-Idimu Road in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
According to Punch News, the incident happened on Wednesday shortly after he completed a delivery and was heading to another destination.
Witnesses alleged that two suspected hoodlums attempted to extort the rider and pushed him while he was riding, causing him to lose control of his motorcycle and crash into the road median. He was said to have died instantly from the impact.
Another eyewitness claimed the victim had earlier been involved in a minor collision with a tricycle rider, which was peacefully resolved by residents and some youths.
However, the suspected hoodlums allegedly demanded money for mediating the dispute, and after the rider said he had none, they reportedly confronted him again before the fatal incident.
The suspects were said to have fled the scene immediately after the crash, while officers from the Idimu Police Division later recovered the victim’s body and motorcycle.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi said investigators received conflicting accounts of what happened.
One version suggested the rider lost control while trying to avoid a pedestrian, while another alleged he may have been pushed by some youths before crashing.
She added that the police are investigating the case and seeking CCTV footage from the area to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the rider’s death.
