Massive wildfires have destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands of residents to flee in Spokane, Washington, as firefighters continue battling multiple fast-moving blazes. According to Punch News, emergency officials said the fires remain uncontained, with authorities still assessing the full extent of the destruction.
Three separate wildfires broke out in and around Spokane over the weekend, prompting widespread evacuation orders. The National Weather Service had earlier warned of extremely dangerous fire conditions caused by strong winds and prolonged dry weather, which fuelled the rapid spread of the flames.
Residents described scenes of widespread devastation, with entire neighbourhoods reduced to ashes while a few nearby homes escaped the destruction. Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown confirmed that hundreds of homes and other structures had been lost, adding that officials were still evaluating whether there had been any fatalities.
Although no deaths or injuries had been confirmed at the time of reporting, authorities warned that the situation could change as emergency crews gain access to affected areas. Fire officials also disclosed that the blazes were 0% contained, while worsening smoke was expected to leave air quality at unhealthy levels.
Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, attributing the severe wildfire season to prolonged drought and climate-related conditions. He said the state was working with federal authorities to secure additional resources for firefighting efforts.
Officials also warned that unauthorised drone activity over wildfire zones had disrupted aerial firefighting operations by forcing helicopters and other aircraft to temporarily suspend flights.
By Sunday morning, the three fires had scorched more than 5,390 acres, with emergency shelters established to accommodate displaced residents as firefighters continued efforts to bring the blazes under control.
